HOW TO GET RID OF BLACK ACNE

Dealing with zits on your face is one thing—but back acne (aka bacne) is another level of annoying. At least when you're wrestling with an angry blemish in your T-zone you can see what you're doing. Not so when pimples pop up on your back. It's hard enough just getting soap back there—applying zit cream between your shoulder blades is like a pulled muscle waiting to happen. And it might not work anyway, because the skin on your back doesn't respond as well to many of the acne treatments you use on your face. Here, dermatologists explain the difference between acne and bacne, and how to get acne off your back for good.

HOW A DEEP BREATH CHANGES YOUR MIND:

Breathing is traditionally thought of as an automatic process driven by the brainstem—the part of the brain controlling such life-sustaining functions as heartbeat and sleeping patterns. But new and unique research, involving recordings made directly from within the brains of humans undergoing neurosurgery, shows that breathing can also change your brain. Simply put, changes in breathing—for example, breathing at different paces or paying careful attention to the breaths—were shown to engage different parts of the brain. Humans’ ability to control and regulate their brain is unique: e.g., controlling emotions, deciding to stay awake despite being tired, or suppressing thoughts.

WHY ASIANS WEAR SURGICAL MASKS IN PUBLIC ?

It’s a phenomenon that’s long been a common in East Asian countries. And ever since the 2002 SARS outbreak and the 2006 bird flu panic, the practice has crossed over into immigrant Asian populations in the US. Now, with Ebola fears still on high, many immigrant Asians aren’t taking chances—despite the fact that the number of known US Ebola infections has now dropped to zero, and assertions by public health authorities that Ebola is almost certainly not airborne-transmissible. The reality is that the woven-cloth surgical masks provide minimal protection from environmental viruses anyway. (Surgeons use them to protect patients from their mouth-borne germs, not the other way around.)

THE AGE-RELATED SKIN PIGMENTATION:

What is skin pigmentation and how to treat these age related changes? Most of us begin to notice a change with our skin pigmentation as we get older. Common signs we see are called age spots, liver spots and sun spots. These skin pigmentation blemishes are brown in color, and normally develop in older people, usually beginning at the age of forty, but have been known to affect those even younger. Although these spots are normal age related changes, this change in skin pigmentation affects one's appearance and treatment is usually sought out.

These two anti-aging powerhouses are similar, yet different. One is stronger and FDA tested, but the other can provide good results over time. When hearing about anti-aging skin care, you’re bound to hear a couple of ingredients pop up time and time again: retinol vs. retinoids. They sound similar and both have wrinkle-fighting power, but they aren’t the exact same thing. Retinoids are a group of vitamin A derivatives that have become “the gold star” in anti-aging skin care, says board-certified dermatologist Edidiong Kaminska, MD, co-founder of Kaminsky Medical and Surgical Consulting Incorporated.

Finally, you get some magnifying glasses, perhaps the non-prescription type at first.

SCIENCE DISCOVERS MORE GENES WITH POTENTIAL LINK TO ADDICTION

Many human diseases, such as tobacco and alcohol addictions, are heritable. Until now, little has been known about what genetic factors contribute to these addictions, and if they put people at risk of inheriting other medical conditions. A recent study, published in Nature Genetics, reveals that these addictions may result from a complex blend of genes and environmental influences, and are genetically correlated to other health issues and diseases.

DO WE HAVE A GENETIC TIME CLOCK ?

If you could find out how much longer you are going to live would you? This is an age old question, how long am I going to live? Do you believe we have a predetermined time on this planet? Is there a way we can determine how much longer we have, or when our, "time" is? Thanks to science and genetic research we can actually come pretty close to answering these questions. We have learned that there are little genetic time clocks at the end of our DNA called telomeres. These little caps help protect the DNA and act like the plastic cap on the end of your tennis shoelace keeping it from fraying.

HOW TO PREVENT LIP FEATHERING:

It's hard enough keeping lipstick in the lines when you're young and have steady hands; imagine how much more difficult it becomes once your skin begins to sag and your lips start to develop wrinkles. The phenomenon of lip feathering is what happens when the skin around your mouth starts developing tiny fine lines, and during the course of the day, your lipstick begins to bleed into these fine lines, which makes the lip look messy. If you want to know how to look younger as you age, preventing lip feathering is an easy way to keep your mouth looking youthful. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FUNGAL AND BACTERIAL ACNE:

We’re taught from our hormone-riddled teen years to be on high alert for acne—and to attack it with every product under the sun at the first sign of a zit. Of course, as adults, we’re wise enough to know that acne is more complex and harder to treat than the commercials of the past had us believe. For one thing, no one ever told us that, sometimes, what looks like acne isn’t acne at all. "Fungal acne" is one such impostor—and nothing on the acne shelves will do a thing to make it go away.

THE INCREDIBLE BENEFITS OF FERMENTED BEETS

Beets and raw beet juice are typically recommended in limited amounts due to high sugar content. However, when fermented, beets may be among the healthiest vegetables out there, as most of the sugar is then gobbled up by beneficial bacteria during the fermentation process while leaving other health-boosting ingredients intact. Fermented foods are also chock-full of probiotics or good bacteria. A large number of studies have demonstrated how the ideal balance and diversity of bacteria in your gut forms the foundation for physical, mental and emotional well-being, and fermented beet juice has many additional benefits beyond probiotics.

WHAT EXACTLY CAUSES AGEING ?

The root causes of aging begin at the molecular and cellular level. Pioneering scientist Leonard Guarente explains how aging works, why it leads to a decline in health, and what can be done about it. Look at a map of the world 200 million years ago and it looks nothing like it does today. What was once a giant continent called Pangea is now entirely different: seven separate continents, with oceans and mountain ranges and even different climates. But it didn’t happen all at once; it happened over time, and scientists now know it was caused by the subtle shift of tectonic plates beneath the earth’s surface that changed the world, and continues to change it, forever.

HOW TO MAKE A DELICIOUS GETALO AT HOME WITHOUT AN ICE CREAM MAKER:

No fancy equipment required! When I was a kid, making homemade ice cream was never an option. "We don't have an ice cream maker," my mom would remind me all of the many times I'd ask. She'd appease me with store-bought ice cream, but I still couldn't stop dreaming of the day when I could buy my very own ice cream maker and make all the ice cream I wanted. Fast forward to now when I technically have an ice cream maker, but it's locked inside a storage unit in Brooklyn far from my home in Berlin.

IS LASER THE RIGHT HAIR REMOVAL METHOD FOR YOU ?

Let’s talk about the pros and cons of laser hair removal. The truth is, when it comes to removing body hair, you’ve got options—and you’ll want to consider all of them before making a decision. You can shave everything away quickly, but the hair grows back in a matter of days. Depilatory creams dissolve hair in minutes, but they have a tendency to smell like wet dog mixed with gasoline. If you want a more thorough hair removal, you might consider waxing or sugaring, which snatches the hair at the root.

WHY PRO-AGING IS A LIFESTYLE

Let me first start off by saying that the term "anti aging" is a misnomer of sorts. The grim fact is that we will all age and eventually die. Not one of us is immortal. The good news is that we can prolong our lives and avoid disease by making a conscious effort to take care of ourselves. Prevention is key when it comes to anti-aging. Many people are still looking for that perfect cream or pill that will make them look younger. The fact is that it's most important to take care of what's on the inside before you will see external results.

IS IT BETTER TO SHOWER IN THE MORNING OR AT NIGHT ?

Let's settle this with science. It’s a massive debate that’s been raging on practically since the invention of bathing: Is it better to shower at night or in the morning? You’ve probably had this discussion with your partner or friends at least once, and maybe it’s even gotten a little heated. Even Reddit is filled with comments from people in both the morning and night camps—and everyone has a theory on why their way is best. The opposing sides seem to have two major arguments.

MELATONIN: THE SUPPLEMENT YOU TAKE BEFORE BED DOES TOTALLY AWESOME THINGS FOR YOUR SKIN

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a derivative of the amino acid tryptophan and is widely distributed in food sources, such as milk, almonds, bananas, beets, cucumbers, mustard, and tomatoes. In humans, melatonin is primarily synthesized by the pineal gland. The conversation around topical melatonin for skin has been buzzing amongst dermatologists for a while now, and lately it’s started to hit the mainstream by popping up in products. And, if preliminary research is to be believed, it may be just as good for your skin as it is for your REM cycle

THINGS YOU MUST KNOW REGARDING THE FRAME® CREAMS THEMSELVES:

It is very important to first evaluate the person in question, their age and their skin type/condition, because the day/night creams of our three different lines are, in fact, not interchangeable. For example, it is true that the P2 or P3 would not be nourishing enough for someone with dry skin or someone who is over the age of 50, for example. Just like it is true that the R3 or R4 might be too rich and end up clogging the pores of someone with skin that tends to be oily or for the typical 20 year old. Therefore, P2/P3 are really only for those who are truly very young or those with skin that tends to be on the oily side.

IS IT HARMFUL TO USE MAKEUP TO COVER  ACNE ?

Breakouts are the worst. If your thought process is anything like mine when a zit manifests on your face, your first instinct might be to disguise it before anyone else notices. Usually, the quickest way to make a breakout disappear is by reaching for a tube of foundation and/or concealer, but is that really what’s best for your skin in the long run? As an avid makeup wearer, I’ve heard mixed answers over the years, so I asked a few experts to weigh in and get the real scoop. “It is hard because makeup is used to conceal breakouts, but it actually can also stoke the fire,” Yale School of Medicine dermatologist Mona Gohara, M.D., tells.

WHY YOU DON’T NEED TO TEST FOR “MTHFR” GENE VARIANTS:

Depression; autism; breast cancer; alcoholism; hair loss; type 1 diabetes; heart disease…. What do these supposedly have in common? Many alternative health websites like to talk about a supposed link between these conditions and a gene called MTHFR—but there's no indisputable evidence that the link really exists. If you’re unfamiliar with the MTHFR gene, it stands for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, which is an enzyme the body needs to process certain substances.

HOW BAD IS TO SWITCH UP YOUR SKINCARE PRODUCTS ALL THE TIME ?

It's hard to beat the satisfaction of trying a new skin-care product and actually seeing results. It's also hard to shake the temptation of trying a new serum, moisturizer, or whatever else Sephora dropped in your inbox this week. But, unfortunately, switching your skin-care products too often may slow your progress with any of them. It takes longer for products to bring on noticeable changes than you might think. Products you can grab off the shelf may promise to "instantly" brighten dark spots, disguise wrinkles, or relieve redness, but we know from experience that things usually don't work that immediately.

WHY WE SHOULD STOP TELLING PEOPLE “YOU LOOK YOUNGER THAN YOUR AGE”

WHAT EXACTLY ARE “ACTIVE INGREDIENTS” IN SKINCARE ?

If you've spent any time digging through the mountains of beauty blogs out there, you've probably come across the term active. (Like, how can you add actives to your regimen, or how to pick actives that can address acne, hydration, or brightening concerns.) But what actually are actives? The short answer: An active is the ingredient in a product addressing whatever skin concern it's meant to target. Whether they work for you is not always clear - until you try them. But there's a lot more to actives than just that. So, here's what dermatologists want you to know about working with actives and how to find one that's most likely to help you. In general, an active is something that contains an active ingredient.

DRY SKIN CONDITION

What is dry skin? Dry skin is a very common skin condition characterized by a lack of the appropriate amount of water in the most superficial layer of the skin, the epidermis. While dry skin tends to affect males and females equally, older individuals are typically much more prone to dry skin. The skin in elderly individuals tends to have diminished amounts of natural skin oils and lubricants. Areas such as the arms, hands, and particularly lower legs tend to be more affected by dry skin.

HOW TO RELIEVE STRESS WITH GENTLE DAILY DETOXING

Aging is defined by Sang Whang, author of "Reverse Aging" as the accumulation of acid wastes within our body. The theory is that we get old because we are not disposing of all internally generated acid wastes and toxins; these simply accumulate in the body. These accumulated toxins are also a cause of stress and with some simple lifestyle changes, the effects can be reversed. We are born with high alkaline blood pH of 7.44 and as we get older, the blood pH drops down to 7.35 or below. This is one of the reasons why younger people are more energetic than older people
